Job Description

Peer Support Specialist- Position requires a MHP who has undergone their own lived experience recovery from their own mental health issue and can share their experience with Thresholds Members.

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) provides peer support services, serves as a member advocate; provides consumer information and peer support for consumers. The PSS performs a wide range of tasks to assist consumers in regaining control over their own lives and over their own recovery process. The PSS will role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills. Position requires a MHP who has undergone recovery from their own mental health issue and can share their experience with Thresholds Members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
 
    The Peer Support Specialist will create a welcoming, accepting environment in the Drop-in Center. The PSS will encourage the development of friendships, positive interaction and leisure activities.
    Position requires a MHP who has undergone recovery from their own mental health issue and can share their experience with Thresholds Members.
    Utilizing their unique recovery experience, the PSS will:
    Teach and role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience.
    Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies.
    The PSS will maintain a working knowledge of current trends and developments in the mental health field by reading books, journals and other relevant material and attending relevant seminars, meetings, and in-service trainings whenever offered.
    The PSS will serve as a recovery agent by:
    Providing and advocating for effective recovery based services.
    Assisting consumers in obtaining services that suit that individual’s recovery needs.
    Informing consumers about community and natural supports and how to utilize these in the recovery process.
    Assisting consumers in developing empowerment skills through self-advocacy and stigma-busting.
    Provides accurate and timely information to your supervisor on all topics and issues related to the operation of the agency and the well-being of members.
 
MARGINAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
 
    Participates in the implementation of Thresholds’ emergency plans related to extreme weather or other emergency condition.
    May be required to work flexible schedules and be available to work on weekends or evenings as required. May be required to be on call.
 
EDUCATION:
 
    MA Preferred in Psychology and or Social work.
 
EXPERIENCE:
 
    Knowledge and understanding of recovery process and models.
    Ability to teach and guide others through recovery process. Ability to lead peer-to-peer support groups. Ability to empower and motivate others.
    Ability work and make decisions independently.
    Understanding and ability to advocate for others. Ability to communicate effectively.
    Ability to facilitate discussions or groups and teach others how to communicate with service providers.
    Ability to recognize stigma. Knowledge of illness, medications and treatment. Understanding of the mental health system and how it works.
    Ability to work as an effective team player.
    Daily access to a personal vehicle is required. Must obtain and maintain $100,000/$300,000/$100,000 bodily injury and liability insurance. Subject to validation every six months.
    May be required to provide transportation for members of the program using a Thresholds provided vehicle or personal vehicle. Must be 23 years of age and meet all insurance carrier’s requirements.
 
SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS
 
    Current and valid driver’s license.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
 
    Ability to stand, bend and stretch. Ability to lift or move up to 30 lbs.
    Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, grasping and lifting may all be required in this position.
    Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, make fine discriminations in sound.
    Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
    Ability to travel to many locations throughout Chicagoland during the workday.
    The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
